KnowYourTeeth Fact of the Week

Prematurely born babies can expect to have dental complications as they grow older.

More than 80 million people suffer from chronic halitosis, or bad breath.

Chemicals called ketones are the primary source of bad breath in those dieting.

Bad breath while traveling happens when the salivary glands slow down the production of saliva, which allows bacteria to grow inside the mouth and bad breath to develop.

A common reason for bad breath is post-nasal drip, which coats the back area of the tongue with bacteria-rich mucous.

Soccer players are more likely than football players to sustain an orofacial injury.

Heat is bad for a mouthguard, so it is not good to leave it in a hot vehicle.

Fifteen million dental injuries occur each year.

Everything that a microorganism needs to survive, including food and water, can be found in a mouthguard.

Since men are more likely to suffer from heart attacks, they also are more likely to be on medications that can cause dry mouth.
